I was making a pot of coffee this morning while the rest of my house slept, and my old friend Mike Soucy popped into my head.
19 years ago, at 2 am, he taught me to brew French press before we hiked in to climb in Rocky Mountain National Park. I recall him walking me through each step, especially the part about stirring the brew before pressing it (I am embarrassed to say I often skip this step 😳).
Mike was also a helluva climbing partner — patient, competent, straightforward, strong and fun to be with, and I imagine those traits serve him well in his work as a mountain guide, which he’s been for decades now.
Do you ever think about the people who’ve taught you things? Even the little things can make a big difference.
